  • Inchallah, mon ami, I've been wandering lately around the narrow streets and wide avenues, craving for flavors of home. The thought of consuming something familiar in this foreign land is as comforting as a warm cup of tea. 🍵🏠

And speaking about home, one cannot dismiss the power of African cuisine. Here in China, it's starting to sprout seeds, yes, even in this land famous for a different kind of spice. How many amongst us have stumbled upon, or been pointed to, an African restaurant—either by sheer luck or by the guiding hand of a friend in need?

I’ve visited a few. Some carry the bold, hearty spirit of our dishes; others try but falter. But even in those attempts, there's a story—of someone's dearly missed home, transposed onto these foreign streets. 😊

So tell me, dear community, which African eateries would you say are worth a visit? Where have you tasted a piece of home? And for those who haven't ventured yet, what dishes would make you take that first step?

Let’s share a meal in conversation, maybe over some fine Joujou or Fufu, and let the memory of flavors guide us. 🍽️

  • Good morning, friends and family of Hafrik. Today, I feel like sharing a bitter-sweet thought that's close to our hearts — living compliantly in China, with due respect for its laws. 🇨🇳🇳🇬

Wole Soyinka once said that to respect a law is easy, if one understands it. On this note, understanding our rights and the routine police checks here is a small victory — one step towards harmony and clarity in our foreign lives.

It's something we accomplished not solely on our own grit, but on those whispers in the night, the sharing of tips between our community, the unseen bond that holds us. 🤗

You know, a Yoruba saying rings in my thoughts: 'A friend is an extra pair of hands.' We've been holding on to each other, haven't we?

Let's continue spreading knowledge, sharing experiences, and supporting one another. We are stronger together. One community, one heart! 💛

  • Chale, yesterday was a strange one for me. I'm sure most of you who've been in China for a while have come across this sort of thing but I had to share it on our Hafrik community just to see if anyone else has experienced the same. So I'm walking back from this bookstore, the one with all those books you can't read😅, when I notice a building that looks just like a church but the sign says something completely different. It turns out it was converted. Can you believe it?🤔

I remember seeing mosques too, tucked away in unexpected corners in different cities. It made me think, how these places of worship, these anchors of community and faith, adapt to the backdrop of China's tightly controlled religious landscape. It's fascinating, medaase!

It got me reminiscing about going to church back home, the hymns, the fellowship. Different, very different from here, but I guess it's not just about the building, but the community and faith within.

  • Hey, community! 🏠🔍 I just found this helpful YouTube video on the three common traps to avoid when renting an apartment in China. If you're planning to move here or know someone who is, this is a must-see. The video provides some really great insights. It made me wonder, what traps did we all encounter or heard about when renting here in China? Share your thoughts and experiences #ChinaLife #LifeHacks. PS: Waaw, don't forget to share with your Mandarin phrase of the day '租房', it means 'rent a house'. Practice saying 'Cházù' — hope it helps in your apartment hunt! 🏡💭

  • Hey Hafrik community! 🍽️ Ever been to an African restaurant in China? If so, how authentic were their dishes, compared to what you remember back home? Wishing there was something more to try beyond 'African chicken' or 'Ethiopian coffee'?
