Let me share with you a personal experience I had this week, which made me think about how tech and finance news really matter, especially for us in the African diaspora. 💡 I was at a local grocery store, mastering my Chinese when the shopkeeper mentioned that the price of beans has shot up due to a global supply issue. You see, China is a huge place and the news here moves fast. As I struggled with my broken Chinese and checked my phone, I found that there's indeed an ongoing drought in some parts affecting the production greatly. As a regular cook of nsima🥣, I couldn’t hide my concern on how this directly impacts our homes and letsema (everyday) life back home. We might be far from our roots, but these big-tech and financial news pieces affect our communities directly. Back there, basic prices such as these decide the livelihood of many. Here, we get a more expensive cup of coffee, but they get a worrying livelihood. Technology is integrating all global platforms, seamlessly transporting news, ideas, and sometimes not-so-good news fast. Being aware of these can help us be prepared, help back home, and sometimes even make savvy decisions for our future. We dubbediaspora are a bridge🌍, we care for both sides of this world. Walking down the streets of Guangzhou this week, I stumbled upon a group of enthusiastic football players - amidst the chaos of the city, there they were, dribbling with such finesse. 🌟 They were all African brothers, shouting in different languages, yet sharing the same passion. It made me think about the real power of football. It’s a common ground that breaks barriers and brings us together. How do you keep this football fever alive here in China?

My name is Ace the Artist, a Zambian visual artist and creative entrepreneur currently based in Zambia. From 2016 to 2022, I lived in China, where I established a successful art business that continues to operate today. My work focuses on creating original artwork while using art as a way to bring people together through creative experiences. In 2024, I partnered with TORI-JI Restaurant in Shanghai to launch a series of Sip & Paint events that welcomed people of all skill levels to explore their creativity in a fun and social environment. These events helped build a vibrant community of art enthusiasts and demonstrated the power of art to connect people from different backgrounds. I also developed a beginner-friendly painting kit designed to teach anyone how to paint, making art more accessible while encouraging creativity and confidence. Through both my artwork and community-based events, my mission is to inspire, educate, and create meaningful artistic experiences. Although I am now based in Zambia, my art business and Sip & Paint community continue to grow in China. Building has tested me in ways I never expected. As CEO, tech lead, product thinker, problem solver, and sometimes the person holding everything together mentally, it has not been easy. There were moments of excitement, but also frustration. From dealing with Apple challenges and technical roadblocks, to handling life itself while still trying to build something meaningful. People often see startups from the outside and think it’s just about launches, funding, or big wins. What they don’t see are the sleepless nights, the uncertainty, the pressure, and the discipline it takes to keep going when things are not moving the way you hoped. But despite everything, I’m still here. Still building. Still learning. Still believing in what Hafrik can become. This journey is shaping me as much as I’m shaping the company. To every founder, builder, engineer, designer, or dreamer carrying weight behind the scenes, I see you. We keep going.

Three years ago, we recorded this video and never posted it. The platform wasn't even called Hafrik yet. It was FLIC, a simple idea to build a community app for foreigners living in China 🇨🇳 In front of the camera, Rejoice and Success, two people who believed in the vision before the vision even had a name. Behind the camera, Andrew shooting it, Lolade holding things together, and myself figuring out what we were even building. We didn't post it because honestly, we were still becoming. The name changed. The vision grew. What started as "let's help foreigners in China connect" turned into something much bigger. We discovered that Africans specifically, whether trading from Lagos, studying in Guangzhou, or building a life in Yiwu, had no real infrastructure built for them. No trusted platform. No community backbone. No one on the ground solving their actual problems. So FLIC became Hafrik. And Hafrik became the operating system for Africans abroad. We're posting this now three years later not because it's perfect. But because every big thing starts somewhere small, uncertain, and unpolished. This was ours.
