New in China? Your SIM card comes first. 📱 Bring your passport to an official China Mobile, China Unicom or China Telecom store, since real-name registration needs it. Pick a plan with plenty of data, because maps, translation, WeChat and Alipay all run on it. Keep your number long term, because your apps and bank get linked to it. Questions? Ask people who've done it in your city Space. Your city is waiting on Hafrik.

New in China? Don't let a scam be your welcome gift 🚨
Many of us learned these the hard way. Here's what to watch for:
1️⃣ "Agents" who want a big deposit before you've seen the house. View it in person, and only pay against a signed contract.
2️⃣ Suppliers whose prices are far below everyone else's. Visit the shop or factory, or use a trusted agent, before you pay.
3️⃣ Anyone offering a "special visa" or work permit shortcut. Only trust official channels.
4️⃣ Strangers asking you to receive money or parcels for them. Say no.
5️⃣ Fake currency exchange deals on WeChat. Use banks or trusted platforms.
6️⃣ Pressure to "pay now or lose the deal." Real deals can wait a day.
When in doubt, ask people who live here. On Hafrik you can check a business or ask your city Space before you send a single yuan.
Stay safe, and share this with someone new 🙏

13OctHSBC Building (IFC Tower 1), No. 8 Century Avenue, Pudong, Shanghai, 200120, ChinaThe Venture Capital World Summit rolls into Shanghai on Tuesday, October 13, landing at the HSBC Building inside IFC Tower 1 on Century Avenue, right in the heart of the Lujiazui financial district in Pudong. Doors open at 9:45am, the program runs 10am to 2pm, and it's a tight four-hour format: welcome networking, a guest speaker slot, one-minute delegate introductions, a pitching session, a panel on investing insights, and a coffee break squeezed in the middle. This is part of the organizer's global World Series circuit, not an Africa-specific event, so don't expect a room full of fellow African founders by default — but that's exactly why it could be worth showing up. If you're building something and need face time with VCs, angel investors, and corporate dealmakers who don't usually swing through African tech circles, this is a shot at it. Tickets aren't cheap and range widely depending on access level, so check pricing before you commit. It's 18+, in-person only, paid parking on site, and no refunds once you're booked.0 Kommentare 0 Geteilt 917 Ansichten 0 Bewertungen

No, Your International License Won't Save You: The Real Rules on Getting a Chinese Driver's LicenseLet's kill a rumor going around a lot of African WeChat groups right now: there is no city in China where you can just walk into the Vehicle Management Office and skip the written test because you're African. The mutual-recognition deals China currently has only cover a handful of countries — France, Serbia, Belgium, and the UAE — plus Hong Kong licenses, which convert without any...0 Kommentare 0 Geteilt 5KB Ansichten 0 Bewertungen4

CNBC caught up with Aleese Lightyear, an American who swapped NYC rent stress for Chengdu and now lives on about $30K a year. $278/month for her downtown apartment, student loans paid off, and she's still banking up to $1,000 a month toward a future Mexico beach house. If you've ever wondered why so many foreigners land in China and just... stay, her budget breakdown makes it obvious. Worth watching for the real numbers, not just vibes.

Still No China Visa-Free Entry for Naija, Ghana or Kenya in 2026 — Here's Who Actually Made the ListLet's kill the confusion once and for all: no, most Africans still can't waltz into China without a visa in 2026. Only two African countries made China's mutual visa exemption list — Mauritius and Seychelles are the only African countries listed among the roughly 30 nations that get 30-day visa-free entry on ordinary passports. That's it. Not Nigeria, not Ghana, not Kenya, not South...0 Kommentare 0 Geteilt 4KB Ansichten 0 Bewertungen5

Importing From China: The Actual Steps Nobody Explains ProperlyEveryone says "just import from China" like it's one click on Alibaba. It's not. I've watched too many people lose money because they skipped steps or trusted the wrong supplier. Here's how it actually works, no fluff. Step one: know exactly what you want before you touch a sourcing site. Not "phone accessories," but the exact spec, material, size, and target price per unit. Vague requests get...0 Kommentare 0 Geteilt 4KB Ansichten 0 Bewertungen5

Little Africa Eats: Where GZ's African Community Actually Goes for Jollof, Suya & Grocery RunsForget the tourist lists — this is where the community actually eats. Xiaobei (exit Line 5, look for the pedestrian overpass) is still the beating heart, an area where Africans can be found speaking Arabic, Bambara, French, Portuguese, Lingala, Malagasy, Yoruba or Igbo. For grilled fish and cheap suds, regulars head to Moustache Bar — a popular hangout amongst African expats and...0 Kommentare 0 Geteilt 5KB Ansichten 0 Bewertungen4

18SepLong Bar - Raffles Shenzhen, T7, One Shenzhen Bay, 3008 Zhongxin Rd, Nanshan District, Shenzhen, Guangdong, ChinaAn afterwork drinks and networking mixer for Shenzhen's tech community — software engineers, data scientists/AI practitioners, IT and cybersecurity professionals, startup founders, and remote workers. It's a casual, recurring meetup (part of an ongoing 'Tech Mixer and Social' series run in multiple Chinese cities) aimed at helping tech workers in Shenzhen connect, swap job leads, and stay current on industry trends over drinks. For Hafrik members in Shenzhen's hardware/AI/data scene, it's a good low-key spot to meet other builders and engineers in the city, including fellow Africans working in tech there. Organizers ask attendees to look for the 'Tech Social' group at the venue, and also run a Discord/WhatsApp community for RSVPs and to see who else is attending. Note: this listing is based on a recurring Eventbrite series rather than a single confirmed one-off date — please check the official Eventbrite page for the exact next date/time before heading out, as the series runs on a rolling schedule across multiple dates.0 Kommentare 0 Geteilt 2KB Ansichten 0 Bewertungen1

Navigating Guangzhou's Xiaobei Market: A Street-by-Street Guide to African Grocery Stores, Hair Suppliers, and Halal EateriesIf you have ever stepped off the metro at Xiaobei station and walked up into the open air, you already know the feeling. 17OctCanton Fair Business Hotel, Pazhou, Haizhu District, GuangzhouHeading to the Canton Fair this October? Join fellow African entrepreneurs, importers, and first-time buyers for an evening of practical, no-nonsense advice on surviving Guangzhou's trade fair season. This meetup brings together experienced traders, freight forwarders, and long-term Guangzhou residents to share real-world strategies for sourcing reliable suppliers, negotiating sample costs and MOQs, and spotting the red flags of common scams (fake trading companies, bait-and-switch quality, deposit fraud, and more). We'll break into small discussion groups by product category (electronics, textiles, home goods, machinery) for targeted Q&A, followed by open networking over drinks and light snacks. Bring your business cards, your questions, and any supplier contracts you'd like a second pair of eyes on. Whether this is your first Canton Fair or your fifteenth, you'll leave with a clearer game plan and a stronger network of contacts who've been where you are. Hosted in English and French, with Mandarin-speaking volunteers on hand to help with translation questions.0 Kommentare 0 Geteilt 2KB Ansichten 0 Bewertungen1

China’s New Exit-Entry Rules Take Effect September 15, 2026 – What Foreigners Need to Know
China’s State Council has issued new Regulations on Exit and Entry Administration (Order No. 841). They come into force on 15 September 2026.
Key changes for foreigners:
• Providing false materials or making false statements on a visa or entry application can now result in a 1–5 year entry ban.
• Common violations include: fake invitation letters, falsified education/work documents, concealing a previous stay in China, or claiming tourism when the real purpose is business/work.
• Anyone who issues a false invitation letter or supporting documents can be fined RMB 5,000–10,000 (individuals) or RMB 10,000–50,000 (companies), plus confiscation of illegal profits.
• Immigration consultants and visa agents in China face stricter registration and heavier penalties (fines, suspension, or licence revocation).
The rules mainly codify existing practices and close loopholes. Ordinary tourists and genuine business travellers following the rules should not be affected.
Stay accurate, avoid fake documents, and apply for the correct visa category.
