Y’all remember that time in Lagos, when you just wake up on a Sunday and your cousin is oyinbo decided to start chasing your kids around the house, making them laugh uncontrollably? I had that deja vu moment right here in China. 😂 My neighbour has a 4-year-old son, a genuinely curious kid who speaks more languages than I care to remember (throwback to the School of hard knocks, Obiwon vibes, abi?🚬). Anyway, this week, this little mugu traipsed into our house while we were having an abeg-o-abeg meal of jollof rice “rice” and beans. He was chatting away with the kids in Mandarin or whatever and my omo was loving it. He pulled out his toys, every colour of the crayon box basically, and played with my kids. So I’m currently in Guangzhou, and something interesting happened today. I went out to eat with a friend. He kept insisting on this particular spot, like “this place is really good, you’ll like it.” But I was also pushing for somewhere else. Funny thing is, we’ve both actually tried each other’s spots before. He’s been to mine and didn’t like it. I’ve been to his, and I didn’t like it either. But somehow, we both still stood our ground 😅 So we ended up going to his spot. We ordered, ate… and just as expected, he enjoyed his food, and I still didn’t. Now I’m just thinking… If we had gone to my own spot instead, would it have been the same thing? Would I be the one enjoying it while he’s just there wondering what the hype is? Same city, same food… completely different experiences. Is it just taste? Or something deeper?
