China's Laser Mosquito Zapper Just Went Into Mass Production — Here's Why African Importers Should Pay Attention

Quick correction before we dive in: the startup behind this thing, Photon Matrix Lab, is actually based in Changzhou, Jiangsu province, not Shenzhen. Easy mix-up since half of China's hardware scene gets lumped into "Shenzhen startup" in people's heads. But the product itself is very real and it just hit mass production this August, with the company saying it's aiming for 3,000 to 5,000 units a month to start, scaling up next year.

What it actually does: it's a boxy little device that looks like a power bank, and it uses LiDAR plus millimeter-wave radar and AI vision to spot mosquitoes mid-flight, then fires a laser pulse that disables their wings so they drop out of the air. No spray, no smoke, no smell. The company says it's tuned specifically for Culex, Aedes, and Anopheles species, which, if you're thinking about malaria and dengue back home, is exactly the group you care about. It comes in two versions, infrared for indoor use at $988 and a visible blue-laser version for gardens and outdoor spaces at $1,088.

Here's the catch and why I'm not telling every auntie to go buy ten of these: that price is brutal for anywhere in Africa right now, and the performance numbers (30 mosquitoes a second, three-millisecond detection) are all manufacturer claims. No independent lab has verified them yet, and the company itself has said more safety and testing data is still coming. The range is also modest, three meters on the basic version, six on the pro, so it's built for a bedroom or a patio corner, not for clearing a compound or a whole neighborhood.

Where this actually gets interesting is on the import/distribution side rather than as a personal buy. The sales team said they've already pulled in over 5,000 orders from more than 70 countries, with a chunk coming from the Middle East after Europe and North America, and their own framing is that markets where pesticide use is restricted or less trusted are the natural fit. That's basically describing a huge chunk of urban West and East Africa, where people are tired of fumigation smell and sprays that barely work against resistant mosquito populations. If you're the kind of Hafrik member running an electronics import business out of Guangzhou or doing trade shows, this is worth a serious look as a premium product line, think private clinics, expat compounds, boutique hotels, and NGO offices rather than mass retail for now.

I'd hold off on bulk ordering until the independent safety certifications actually land, since the company has said those are still in progress. But keep this one on your radar. Mosquito tech that actually kills instead of just repelling or trapping is rare, and if the price comes down even 30% once production scales past 5,000 units a month, this becomes a genuinely sellable product for the diaspora business crowd.
