  • CNBC caught up with Aleese Lightyear, an American who swapped NYC rent stress for Chengdu and now lives on about $30K a year. $278/month for her downtown apartment, student loans paid off, and she's still banking up to $1,000 a month toward a future Mexico beach house. If you've ever wondered why so many foreigners land in China and just... stay, her budget breakdown makes it obvious. Worth watching for the real numbers, not just vibes.

  • Live Stream = Illegal Working?
Making money from live streams in China as a foreigner?
    It's possible.
🚫 However, most foreign influencers are doing it illegally.
Tourist visa, student visa, Q1 family visa — NONE let you work.
Live streaming for money IS work, according to Article 41 of the Exit & Entry Law.
What happens if you get caught?
    • ¥5,000 - ¥20,000 fine
    • 5-15 days detention
    • Deportation
    • 1-5 YEAR entry ban
💰 You also MUST pay Chinese taxes.
All income from streams in China is China-source income.
Tax rate: 20%-40% on labor payments.
Platforms must withhold tax — but if they don't, it's still YOUR problem.
🏢 You can't register as a solo business.
Foreigners can't be 个体户 (individual proprietors).
MCN companies have foreign investment restrictions too.
✅ 3 steps to do it legally:
    -Get a Z visa + work permit
-Sign with a licensed platform or MCN
-Let them handle your tax withholding
Don't risk your life in China over a side hustlem

  • China’s New Exit-Entry Rules Take Effect September 15, 2026 – What Foreigners Need to Know

China’s State Council has issued new Regulations on Exit and Entry Administration (Order No. 841). They come into force on 15 September 2026.

    Key changes for foreigners:

    • Providing false materials or making false statements on a visa or entry application can now result in a 1–5 year entry ban.

    • Common violations include: fake invitation letters, falsified education/work documents, concealing a previous stay in China, or claiming tourism when the real purpose is business/work.

    • Anyone who issues a false invitation letter or supporting documents can be fined RMB 5,000–10,000 (individuals) or RMB 10,000–50,000 (companies), plus confiscation of illegal profits.

    • Immigration consultants and visa agents in China face stricter registration and heavier penalties (fines, suspension, or licence revocation).

The rules mainly codify existing practices and close loopholes. Ordinary tourists and genuine business travellers following the rules should not be affected.

Stay accurate, avoid fake documents, and apply for the correct visa category.

Sources: Official State Council regulation + reputable English summaries (Straits Times, China Daily, immigration law firms).

  • Babe👩👧, did you see the video about Chinese unspoken rules? 🤯 I just spotted it and couldn’t believe my eyes—like don’t say 'thank you' after offering a cigarette or tea to others! 🍵🚬 It’s such a striking insight into our cultural differences—can you imagine? Traditions of respect and courteous gestures that foreigners may misunderstand. Let's talk about this one—the no 'thank you' rule. How did you navigate around this when you first arrived? 🫱🌍 #ChinaLife #CulturalGems

  • Three years ago, we recorded this video and never posted it.
The platform wasn't even called Hafrik yet. It was FLIC, a simple idea to build a community app for foreigners living in China 🇨🇳
In front of the camera, Rejoice and Success, two people who believed in the vision before the vision even had a name.
Behind the camera, Andrew shooting it, Lolade holding things together, and myself figuring out what we were even building.
We didn't post it because honestly, we were still becoming.
The name changed. The vision grew. What started as "let's help foreigners in China connect" turned into something much bigger. We discovered that Africans specifically, whether trading from Lagos, studying in Guangzhou, or building a life in Yiwu, had no real infrastructure built for them. No trusted platform. No community backbone. No one on the ground solving their actual problems.
    So FLIC became Hafrik.
And Hafrik became the operating system for Africans abroad.
We're posting this now three years later not because it's perfect. But because every big thing starts somewhere small, uncertain, and unpolished. This was ours.
To Rejoice, Success, Andrew, Lolade, and everyone who was in that room thank you for showing up before it made sense to. 🙏🏾

  • Let us settle something today.
What is actually the hardest city to live in as a foreigner in China?
Not the hardest to visit. The hardest to actually build a life in.
Comment your answer and tell me why. I have my own opinion but I want to hear yours first.

  • Living in a new country can quietly turn into a routine of work and home, class and home. Before you know it, months pass and you’ve met almost no one outside your small circle.

If you’re in China, don’t let that happen.

Opportunities here rarely show up through isolation. They come through conversations, shared meals, events, collaborations, introductions, and simply being visible. The people you meet today can open doors you didn’t even know existed tomorrow.

Go out. Attend that meetup. Join that community. Start the conversation.
Don’t just survive in China. Build something here.
