CNBC caught up with Aleese Lightyear, an American who swapped NYC rent stress for Chengdu and now lives on about $30K a year. $278/month for her downtown apartment, student loans paid off, and she's still banking up to $1,000 a month toward a future Mexico beach house. If you've ever wondered why so many foreigners land in China and just... stay, her budget breakdown makes it obvious. Worth watching for the real numbers, not just vibes.

Live Stream = Illegal Working?
Making money from live streams in China as a foreigner?
It's possible.
π« However, most foreign influencers are doing it illegally.
Tourist visa, student visa, Q1 family visa — NONE let you work.
Live streaming for money IS work, according to Article 41 of the Exit & Entry Law.
What happens if you get caught?
• ¥5,000 - ¥20,000 fine
• 5-15 days detention
• Deportation
• 1-5 YEAR entry ban
π° You also MUST pay Chinese taxes.
All income from streams in China is China-source income.
Tax rate: 20%-40% on labor payments.
Platforms must withhold tax — but if they don't, it's still YOUR problem.
π’ You can't register as a solo business.
Foreigners can't be δΈͺδ½ζ· (individual proprietors).
MCN companies have foreign investment restrictions too.
β 3 steps to do it legally:
-Get a Z visa + work permit
-Sign with a licensed platform or MCN
-Let them handle your tax withholding
Don't risk your life in China over a side hustlem

Saw this on one of my favorite content creators In China.
What’s it like working in China ?
Living and working in China has been one of the most interesting chapters of my life—but it’s also taught me that there isn’t one “China experience.”
As a PE teacher and content creator, I get to experience things I never imagined: teaching in a different education system, adapting to new environments, building relationships, taking care of my health and recovery, and even exploring business opportunities through factory visits.
But I’ve also learned that what you see online is only one side of the story.
This carousel gives you a glimpse into my experience working and living in China—the opportunities, the challenges, and some of the things I wish more people considered before making the move.
And if you want the full story, I filmed an entire week of my life as a PE teacher in China—from the classroom to the gym, school life, recovery, meetings, and everything happening in between.

China’s New Exit-Entry Rules Take Effect September 15, 2026 – What Foreigners Need to Know
China’s State Council has issued new Regulations on Exit and Entry Administration (Order No. 841). They come into force on 15 September 2026.
Key changes for foreigners:
• Providing false materials or making false statements on a visa or entry application can now result in a 1–5 year entry ban.
• Common violations include: fake invitation letters, falsified education/work documents, concealing a previous stay in China, or claiming tourism when the real purpose is business/work.
• Anyone who issues a false invitation letter or supporting documents can be fined RMB 5,000–10,000 (individuals) or RMB 10,000–50,000 (companies), plus confiscation of illegal profits.
• Immigration consultants and visa agents in China face stricter registration and heavier penalties (fines, suspension, or licence revocation).
The rules mainly codify existing practices and close loopholes. Ordinary tourists and genuine business travellers following the rules should not be affected.
Stay accurate, avoid fake documents, and apply for the correct visa category.

In the proud rhythm of our Nigerian and African beats, there lies the essence of the spirit of a people. And here in China, our music, parties and nightlife? C'est formidable. Any night out in the Yiwu streets, reminded of the melodies of home, one cannot help but feel a strange kinship with the culture of our host country, both dancing to an unending parade of rhythm - whether it's Fuji or Afrobeats in our own spaces, or Chinese melodies elsewhere. πΆ
Some may argue that our vibrant African music and boldness in parties are jarring to the tranquil Chinese nights. Mon ami, I respectfully take the contrary position. The syncopated beats of our music, born from struggle and resilience,ζ± they are like tea - intently brewed to be shared, experienced together,ζ±Yiwu's diverse tapestry of nightlife embracing each flavor. Let our music, and the unity it sows,ζ±be a bridge,ζ±a vibrant thread weaving through the night’s fabric. π
Let's dance, let's party, because our light is what warms the soul and lets our presence bloom in every corner of this diverse world. Mindful, yes; respectful, oui... but never muted. Because in our music, we carry our heritage proudly, and when the Chinese night meets the African beat, it's not just a party, it's a conversation between cultures. π₯β¨ #UnitedInRhythms #HeritageInMelodiesIn the proud rhythm of our Nigerian and African beats, there lies the essence of the spirit of a people. Hey folks, anyone craving Nigerian and African tunes in the party scene of China? πΆπ³π¬ Here's a useful tip for ya! You may not find many clubs playing solely Nigerian and African music, but you can't let that stop the vibe. Turn your phone into a pocket DJ! Most DJ apps allow you to drop in tracks to create a playlist. Zvakanaka,δΊ²ζε₯½ε们π! Let me share with you a personal experience I had this week, which made me think about how tech and finance news really matter, especially for us in the African diaspora. π‘
I was at a local grocery store, mastering my Chinese when the shopkeeper mentioned that the price of beans has shot up due to a global supply issue. You see, China is a huge place and the news here moves fast. As I struggled with my broken Chinese and checked my phone, I found that there's indeed an ongoing drought in some parts affecting the production greatly. As a regular cook of nsimaπ₯£, I couldn’t hide my concern on how this directly impacts our homes and letsema (everyday) life back home.
We might be far from our roots, but these big-tech and financial news pieces affect our communities directly. Back there, basic prices such as these decide the livelihood of many. Here, we get a more expensive cup of coffee, but they get a worrying livelihood.
Technology is integrating all global platforms, seamlessly transporting news, ideas, and sometimes not-so-good news fast. Being aware of these can help us be prepared, help back home, and sometimes even make savvy decisions for our future. We dubbediaspora are a bridgeπ, we care for both sides of this world. Let’s keep up with the news, our families may depend on it down the line. π
