Still No China Visa-Free Entry for Naija, Ghana or Kenya in 2026 — Here's Who Actually Made the List

Let's kill the confusion once and for all: no, most Africans still can't waltz into China without a visa in 2026. Only two African countries made China's mutual visa exemption list — Mauritius and Seychelles are the only African countries listed among the roughly 30 nations that get 30-day visa-free entry on ordinary passports. That's it. Not Nigeria, not Ghana, not Kenya, not South Africa, not Egypt. Two island nations with a combined population smaller than Lagos.

It gets worse when you look at the 240-hour transit policy, the one that lets travelers connecting through Chinese airports skip the visa if they're headed to a third country. China expanded that program to 55 countries, broken down as 40 in Europe, 6 in the Americas, 2 in Oceania, and 7 in Asia. Add that up and you get zero for Africa. Not partial exclusion, not "some countries missing" — the entire continent got shut out of that list, and Nigerians and other African travellers connecting through Chinese airports still need a standard visa before departure. Meanwhile passport holders from Indonesia, Brazil, and even Qatar can breeze through Beijing or Guangzhou for up to 10 days without touching an embassy.

This stings extra because of the rhetoric. China talks a big game about "win-win" partnership with Africa, FOCAC summits, Belt and Road money flowing into Lagos-Ibadan rail and Nairobi expressways. But when it comes to actually letting African citizens move freely, the door stays firmly shut while it swings wide open for Europe, North America, and even single Gulf states. Analysts and travel industry people have already called this out — the gap between Beijing's Africa messaging and its actual mobility policy is hard to ignore.

For Nigerian citizens specifically, entry still runs through the old system: apply for a regular visa, often with an invitation letter from a Chinese host or a licensed travel agency if you're going in a tourist group. There is some good news on cost — the Chinese Embassy in Nigeria has extended its visa-fee reduction policy through the end of 2026, so at least the price of applying hasn't gone up. But cheaper isn't the same as visa-free, and cheaper still means paperwork, appointments, and processing time that citizens of 55+ other countries simply don't deal with.

If you're African and traveling to China in 2026, don't get caught out by transit-visa TikToks talking about hopping through Shanghai for free — check your passport against the actual list first, because odds are you're not on it. Until Beijing decides to extend either list to the continent it claims to prioritize, the visa office remains the only route in for the vast majority of us.
