Importing From China: The Actual Steps Nobody Explains Properly

Everyone says "just import from China" like it's one click on Alibaba. It's not. I've watched too many people lose money because they skipped steps or trusted the wrong supplier. Here's how it actually works, no fluff.

Step one: know exactly what you want before you touch a sourcing site. Not "phone accessories," but the exact spec, material, size, and target price per unit. Vague requests get you vague quotes and suppliers who smell a first-timer.

Step two: use the right platform for the right job. Alibaba is for bulk orders from manufacturers, usually with MOQs starting at 100-500 units. 1688.com is the local Chinese wholesale site, often 20-30% cheaper, but it's all in Mandarin and most sellers won't ship internationally or deal with foreigners directly, so you'll need an agent. If you want to see and touch products in person, Yiwu International Trade Market near Shanghai is basically a physical version of Alibaba with over 75,000 stalls.

Step three: vet suppliers hard. Ask for their business license, request a video call of the factory floor, and never wire full payment upfront. Standard practice is 30% deposit, 70% before shipping. If a supplier only accepts full payment via personal WeChat transfer with no contract, walk away.

Step four: order a sample first. Always. A sample that costs you $50 and two weeks is way cheaper than discovering your 2,000-unit order has the wrong stitching or a cracked plastic mold.

Step five: get a sourcing agent if you're new or ordering from multiple factories. Companies like Sourcing Bro, Guided Imports, or local agents in Guangzhou and Yiwu will inspect goods, consolidate shipments, and negotiate in Mandarin for a fee (usually 3-10% of order value). Worth every yuan if you're not fluent in Chinese or unfamiliar with local business customs.

Step six: sort your shipping method. Air freight is faster (5-10 days) but pricier, sea freight is cheap for bulk but takes 25-45 days depending on your destination port in Africa. Get a freight forwarder who handles customs clearance on both ends, not just the China side.

Step seven: know your home country's import duties and required documentation before the goods even leave China. Nothing worse than your container sitting at Lagos or Mombasa port racking up demurrage fees because you didn't have the right paperwork ready.

The whole process from first inquiry to goods in hand usually takes 6-10 weeks. Anyone promising faster with lower risk is probably cutting a corner that'll cost you later.
