China’s Railways Go Fully Digital: No More Paper Invoices
From October 1, 2025, paper reimbursement vouchers in China’s railway passenger sector are officially history. All train passengers will now receive electronic invoices (e-invoices), marking a new chapter in China’s digital transformation journey.
π Why This Change?
China’s decision to fully adopt e-invoices improves efficiency, reduces fraud, and is better for the environment. Compared to paper vouchers, digital invoices are harder to forge, easier to verify, and ensure greater transparency.
π΅ Accessibility Matters
Railway authorities have made sure that the system is inclusive for elderly passengers and those without internet access. Offline support remains available at station ticket windows and self-service machines. With a simple “scan-to-invoice slip”, travelers can generate their e-invoice through the official 12306 railway app.
π The Transition Timeline
- June 2020: Electronic tickets introduced
- Nov 2024: Full promotion of digital e-invoices began
- Sept 2025: Transition period ended (paper + e-invoices)
- Oct 2025: Complete nationwide switch to e-invoices
π Key Benefits of E-Invoices
- β Environmentally friendly, reduces paper waste
- β Harder to forge, easier to verify
- β Faster processing for refunds & ticket changes
- β Can be received by app, email, or tax system
