I was at a local grocery store, mastering my Chinese when the shopkeeper mentioned that the price of beans has shot up due to a global supply issue. You see, China is a huge place and the news here moves fast. As I struggled with my broken Chinese and checked my phone, I found that there's indeed an ongoing drought in some parts affecting the production greatly. As a regular cook of nsima🥣, I couldn’t hide my concern on how this directly impacts our homes and letsema (everyday) life back home.

We might be far from our roots, but these big-tech and financial news pieces affect our communities directly. Back there, basic prices such as these decide the livelihood of many. Here, we get a more expensive cup of coffee, but they get a worrying livelihood.

Technology is integrating all global platforms, seamlessly transporting news, ideas, and sometimes not-so-good news fast. Being aware of these can help us be prepared, help back home, and sometimes even make savvy decisions for our future. We dubbediaspora are a bridge🌍, we care for both sides of this world. Their latest program, #FitAndJoy, aimed at creating a health-conscious culture and transforming workspaces into mini-fitness centers. Imagine! They've got all this cool equipment and they just set them up right in your workplace, and train you up. What a win! The best part? I hear they explaining everything in plain Pidgin, and even Mandarin.🏋️‍♂️💪

I mean, where else can you find such a thing? And naira to ya, it's affordable! Hey Hafrik folks 🌍🇨🇳, I was out and about in China this week and saw something I had to share. Who knew?! The Great Wall isn't the only historical marvel here. I stumbled upon this absolutely breathtaking ancient town in Sichuan! 🏰

Walking through its narrow cobbled streets, you can smell the history in the air; it's like time stood still since the bronze age! This town wasn't in any tourist guide I had, but I'm telling you, it was worth finding. So much character! 🏞️

I'm talking bamboo craft shops 🎍, tea houses that have been in families for centuries 🍵, and food so authentic - straight from Granny's kitchen. All of this without spending a ton of cash either; prices here are shiwaje 😊.

Yesterday was one of those days when China's visa rules feel like a riddle wrapped in a puzzle 🔍🤷‍♂️. I went to the visa application center to help a friend who's been trying to get a new visa, and let me tell you, the place is buzzing like a beehive! So many people, so many papers and photos, and the line was longer than the queue at the chop bar on a Friday night 😅.

One guy, Ahmed was his name, shared his story as he kiddingly ranted about how he had to reapply for his visa - again. They tell you one thing in the consulate when you're applying, and another when you show up with the exact same documents. Humbled him enough to treat us all to a round of drinks later on 🥂.

On the bright side, it seems there's a fresh batch of ease-ups in immigration news for some types of visas. Heard whispers of quicker processing times – which is music to our ears, medaase! Just remember, in China, a day in immigration news can change your plans faster than you can say 'Ataaloe!'. Keep your documents tight, and check those new rules before your visa interview date, or you'll find yourself at the chop bar more frequent than you would like. My people, I just had to share my experience yesterday. I completed dey plan sef for how to relocate back to Naija from this China place I dey. Dem say make I no worry o, but wetin I go do without my family and all the jollof and akara wey I no go find here again?😂👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 How far, life be like that - always moving, no wahala.

This week, I ran into a fellow Nigerian who just came back from home. E be like say seeing him was a mirror showing me the way home. He nearly almost shed crocodile tears when he was telling me about the excitement of hearing his local dialect again and just the sense of belonging. I swear I felt something inside me when I heard that story.

Na so I ask am, how far with the relocation process? He told me all about visas and the hassle he had to deal with - from finding local agents, to sorting out his documents. 📚📑 Personally, I jot down every single advice he gave me and took screenshots on my phone.

Looking at the timeline and everything, it's no bee like ten over ten (10/10). Ma life for China dey improve bit by bit, but I think about going back home sef. One thought that has framed our journey and sometimes clashes with conventional wisdom is that being in China is teaching our kids valuable life lessons many parents might overlook. Be China, betam sew - 🇨🇳 life here is so much more fast-paced and structured than we ever experienced back home. For many, this level of discipline and structure might spell out ‘strict parenting’, but we see it as an opportunity. Our kids are growing up understanding the balance between hard work and play, a reality that will serve them well in their adulthood.

I know many parents might disagree with this ‘hot take’ 🔥, but it humbles me to see how such an environment has helped our kids grow into resilient, independent young people. After all, aren’t these qualities every parent hopes to cultivate in their children? 🤔

So, living in China and that life here has got me thinking about raising a family and all that jazz. Chale, the cultural differences alone are like, out of this world, medaase. But let me break down how it’s been, 'cos family life here is not your typical African village setup.

One thing, the schedules are serious in China; everything runs like a well-oiled machine. For kids, that means a lot of school, even on weekends sometimes. The focus is on academics, no time to waste. The pressure! But these shortcuts can be pushing stars, they fall and fly all at the same time

Good thing is, you get support from the community in raising the kids. They got this collective rearing where everyone pitches in. It's random, but it works, abi? Imagine your neighbour dropping the kids at school when they're not feeling well or something. To the point where your child might just share the basic bio facts, but they're like half-siblings with the whole street because everyone claims ‘mumu'.

Teaching them the language has been an adventure, plenty of L's taken. But when you see them transition - from ya fun twi and pidgin夹杂普通话 - to speaking like mini Chinese national treasures, it’s all worth it. I’ve named this game Triple Lingual Toddlers.

Family outings are top-notch too. Visiting ancient sites is basically like living history books. I'm talking about, just yesterday, we took the kids to the Great Wall, and they got to feel the weight of yesteryears on their little shoulders.

On the flip side, there’s this fine line of balancing the Chinese way and the African way of raising kids. Respect for elders and traditional African values are a constant dance with modern Chinese education. The clash is real but learning how to mesh them is like a full-time gig
