  • Dumela reletswe, this week's story comes with numbers ๐Ÿ’ธ๐Ÿ“ˆ - and they're not lottery numbers, hahaha. Ke a leboga morena, I wanted to share some quick money transfers and currency exchange tips that worked for me.

Is this normal? This week, I sent money home for the first time without stressing about it. I went to a local bank and they offered me the best rates - way better than those 'exchange kiosks' that promise quick trade under shady lights! ๐Ÿค” Remember to compare the rates before you exchange, especially when seeing how the rates fluctuate.

Another thing I saw, you can use apps on your phone to send money home - who knew, right? I tried it, and let me tell you, it was a smooth ride. It's like sending a 'outu' but way quicker. ๐Ÿ“ฒ Just make sure your app is secure and trusted, don't fall for any promises of speed if they don't ask for the right ID proofs.

Lastly, fees! They're like hidden little taxes that come out of your money. Be watchful for hidden fees when exchanging currencies, especially in those tempting offers that promise the world but deliver tiny changes. ๐Ÿค‘

Ke a leboga morena, any of you have tips for exchanging and transferring money? Let’s learn from each other and avoid the 'wrong move' in the world of money. #MoneyTalks #ChinaGoesDigital

  • Everyone knows China offers Africa opportunities. But not everyone agrees with this old widower from Ibadan: some say side hustles are just filling empty pockets.

I say, why not?๐Ÿค” Our countrymen's hard work in China is making waves, even if it means starting small. My food stall buddies in Guangzhou have grown their businesses - at every turn, they learn, adapt. It has its ups and downs, yes, but it teaches resilience and resourcefulness. ๐Ÿ’ช

Their stories, their side hustles... Calls to home about their progress make me smile. Mama, she likes to hear these tales because they are the mark of progress, the kin of risk-taking.

Some might argue, isn’t it enough to have one job? But my reply leans on this Yoruba saying: 'If a man is not a hunter, should he quit chasing?' There’s room for more than one hunt in life. And for the hustlers of this generation, may we find and chase many lions.๐Ÿฆ

  • Nkem, my 11-year-old, has been struggling with her Mandarin lately ๐Ÿ“š. I made her start classes over a year ago, hoping it would be good preparation when the time comes to study in a Chinese university. Well, this week she came home and asked me, “Mom, why do we study HSK?” Instead of getting mad, I picked her brain further, and she went on about how she found the language classes interesting but she'd appreciate more motivation. That got us talking about scholarships! She perked up when I mentioned some of the scholarship opportunities available for proficient Mandarin speakers, including the ones right here in China. It’s not just about getting good grades in HSK levels anymore. There are scholarships tied to language proficiency! ๐Ÿ’ธ This has opened our eyes to the bigger picture. Now we're both more energized about our language journey. It’s not only about learning a new language but also opening doors to incredible opportunities. I wish I had known earlier... maybe we’d be further along in this journey. Sharing this hope with you all, to keep our kids encouraged in their Mandarin studies, knowing it could lead them to chase those scholarship dreams ๐Ÿƒ‍โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿƒ‍โ™‚๏ธ!

  • So, living in China and that life here has got me thinking about raising a family and all that jazz. Chale, the cultural differences alone are like, out of this world, medaase. But let me break down how it’s been, 'cos family life here is not your typical African village setup.

One thing, the schedules are serious in China; everything runs like a well-oiled machine. For kids, that means a lot of school, even on weekends sometimes. The focus is on academics, no time to waste. The pressure! But these shortcuts can be pushing stars, they fall and fly all at the same time

Good thing is, you get support from the community in raising the kids. They got this collective rearing where everyone pitches in. It's random, but it works, abi? Imagine your neighbour dropping the kids at school when they're not feeling well or something. To the point where your child might just share the basic bio facts, but they're like half-siblings with the whole street because everyone claims ‘mumu'.

Teaching them the language has been an adventure, plenty of L's taken. But when you see them transition - from ya fun twi and pidginๅคนๆ‚ๆ™ฎ้€š่ฏ - to speaking like mini Chinese national treasures, it’s all worth it. I’ve named this game Triple Lingual Toddlers.

Family outings are top-notch too. Visiting ancient sites is basically like living history books. I'm talking about, just yesterday, we took the kids to the Great Wall, and they got to feel the weight of yesteryears on their little shoulders.

On the flip side, there’s this fine line of balancing the Chinese way and the African way of raising kids. Respect for elders and traditional African values are a constant dance with modern Chinese education. The clash is real but learning how to mesh them is like a full-time gig

I’d say, family life in China, it keeps you on your toes, but there’s a kind of magic in making these cultures fit like a puzzle - and our kids? The living, breathing evidence of that magic. What’s your take, o? Feel free to share your own family stories or thoughts in China. Let’s chop this up.
