Be honest — do you feel truly welcome here, or just tolerated? Some days, the stares feel normal. Other days, it’s like we’re aliens. Is China a foreigner-friendly country, or is it just a business transaction for most of us?

It's mostly a business transaction to be honest, until perhaps the day they start opening up to the idea of foreigners having long term residency permits like some European countries, you can stay for 15 years in this country and be renewing your visa etc , you will never be fully part of their society.

I feel you on this. I’ve been here for a few years, and it often does feel like we’re only here as long as we’re useful. You can build a life, speak the language, follow the rules but there’s still a wall you can’t cross.
That said, I’ve met some genuinely kind locals too. It’s just… complicated.

Interesting take. For me, it’s been a mix. I’ve had locals go out of their way to help me and make me feel at home but I’ve also had moments where I’m reminded I’ll always be seen as “the foreigner.”
I think it depends a lot on where you are and what you do. Still feels like we’re walking a fine line between guest and outsider.

Thank you both for sharing so honestly. That’s exactly why we created Hafrik to give space for these layered, sometimes conflicting experiences.
It’s true the reality isn’t black or white. Some days you feel embraced, other days reminded you’re still an outsider. But the more we talk about it, the more we see we’re not alone and maybe, just maybe, we start to shift the narrative.
