Before moving to China, I thought all I needed was a good product and a solid business plan. But I quickly learned that in China, relationships or guanxi, are everything. People do business with those they trust, and trust is built over time through shared meals, conversations, and consistency. It’s not just about what you’re selling; it’s about who knows you and how they feel about you. I would’ve started networking earlier if I knew that.

Honestly, I wish someone had told me how cold the university dorms get in the winter. Coming from Nigeria, I didn’t expect to be freezing indoors. The heaters barely work, and we had to layer up even when sleeping. My advice to any new student, buy a small electric heater if possible, and don’t underestimate the cold. It hit me hard that first winter.

I wish I had known Chinese before coming to China. I remember being in an environment where communication was difficult, which made life very uncomfortable. I also wish I had understood how admissions agencies operate. When I arrived, I thought I wouldn't need to pay any additional fees, but I ended up having to pay again.
